Job Description

The Provost and Vice President for Academic Services (Provost) is the Chief Academic Officer for the College and serves as the second-in-command, acting for the President in his absence.

The Provost will be a visionary who works collaboratively with the President, other Vice Presidents and Dean of the Faculty to oversee the educational programs and advance the academic, research and service missions of the College.

The Provost oversees the policies and priorities that create, foster and sustain educational excellence across the college, including policies that support the instructional programs, guide the recruitment, selection, retention and promotion of superior faculty, and ensure the recruitment, matriculation and graduation of outstanding students.

The Provost also provides institutional leadership and support for the College's research efforts. The Provost is responsible for all academic matters, including budgetary oversight for activities affecting the educational programs and research, and achievement and maintenance of appropriate accreditations.

The chief information officer will also have a dotted line responsibility to the Provost. In addition, the Provost is responsible for the Library, the Area Health Education Center, and the Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Office.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works with the President as a member of the senior administration to articulate the Mission and Vision of Paine College.
  • Develops and articulates the long-term vision and strategic plan for Academic Affairs within the College. In consultation with the President, oversees the implementation of this vision for the college, including providing leadership for the academic planning process and promoting the development of education and research.
  • Advises and supports the president on college programs, policies and operations to ensure the success of the college; ensure that policies foster excellence, equity and diversity.
  • Sets priorities for Academic Affairs that are consistent with the long-term plans of the college.
  • Provides leadership, direction and management to the academic organizational structure of the college and articulates the roles and responsibilities of the major academic leaders within that structure along with milestones and measures against which progress can be measured.
  • Develops and fosters positive and productive relationships between the college and its various constituencies to include the Board of Trustees, the Augusta community, alumni, the donor community, as well as national college and university organizations and accrediting agencies.
  • In consultation with the President, the chief financial officer, and other members of the President's Executive Cabinet, determines budgetary priorities and assists in the development of an annual budget for the college; administer Academic Affairs budget once approved.
  • Oversees the faculty appointment, development, promotion and tenure processes; collaborates with the Dean of the Faculty to build the size and quality of the faculty as appropriate for the college mission; develops and fosters initiatives to positively impact the quality of the faculty experience, including creative approaches to faculty development and a commitment to creating an environment conducive to significant faculty engagement and satisfaction.
  • Commitment to cultural diversity throughout the college, and experience in the management of diversity issues.
  • Represents the president as needed.
  • Leads the implementation of relevant goals in the College's strategic plan which affects educational programs, research and service elements.
  • Coordinates the planning, development, coordination, review, and administration of all educational programs.
  • Supervises the Dean of the Faculty and Academic Directors.
  • Oversees all academic units that report to the Office of Academic Affairs including the academic schools and other units such as the Library and Learning Resources Center, Academic Center for Excellence and Success (ACES) and the Office of the Registrar.
  • Holds oversight and manage the affairs of external funding under Academic Affairs to include, but not limited to Upward Bound (UB) and Student Support Services (SSS).
  • Other duties as determined by the president.

Other Responsibilities Include

  • Manages the budget in instructional and academic support areas.
  • Upholds academic standards set by national, state, regional, and professional accrediting bodies.
  • Serves as a member of the Administrative Council.
  • Presides at meetings of the faculty.
  • Services as a member of the Committee on Strategic Planning and Evaluation.
  • Serves as an ex-officio member of other standing committees of the faculty.
  • Functions as necessary, in the absence of the President.

Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate from a regionally accredited university with appropriate academic and administrative experience.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in initiating and implementing academic programs.
  • Knowledge of higher education policy trends.
  • The ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing) with all constituents of the College community.
  • Commitment to the Mission, Vision, Core Values, and Strategic Goals of the College.
  • A substantial personal record in research and education commensurate with the appointment to the rank of full professor.
  • Successful experience with the supervision of staff and the management of a multi-faceted program, including the documented ability to lead an effective academic management and leadership team.
  • Highly developed human relation skills leading to the ability to work well with individuals at all levels in the college.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • College or university level policy development.
  • Strategic Planning experience.
  • Understanding and appreciation of the importance of fund raising and other external forms of support.
  • Budgeting and financial management experience at the college or university level.
